Flash is Going Away, It’s Time to Face Facts

Tick tock, tick tock … time is running out! It’s time to convert your e-learning courses, because FLASH IS DISAPPEARING! According to the Chromium Flash Roadmap, Flash will be disabled by default in Chrome this upcoming July, and Flash will be removed entirely in December 2020. This shouldn’t be news to you … but there’s a lot going on in the world and this may have fallen off your radar.

So what are your options?

  • Find a time stone from another dimension, travel backwards and forwards through time every possible way, and determine the odds that Flash somehow, some way, doesn’t disappear? Odds are slim. Someone could ruin your plans with a snap of their fingers.
  • Form an allegiance with people who are trying wildly to keep their Flash content. Perhaps you might enlist the help of some dragons? Winter is coming.
  • Adopt a training regimen that involves swords that look like super-high-powered flashlights. When browsers try to eliminate Flash, respond, “These are not the SWFs you’re looking for.” Sounds like a made-up story … from long ago … and far, far away.

In all seriousness, by now you have to accept that Flash is going away. How scared should you be? Is this like the Y2K bug, where everyone predicted calamity, yet the anticlimactic result was that one cash register didn’t work at one store? Probably not. Flash disappearing isn’t the end of the world, but it will still be very inconvenient if your learners can’t complete their training.

The tricky thing is that your organization will likely disable Flash before Adobe does, because it takes time to test and modify browsers. Your IT department can’t wait until the very last minute to make the switch. One of my clients recently put it this way … “We know the train is coming at us, but we don’t know when it’s going to get here.” Interesting that this apt metaphor uses a train to describe a problem with converting training. 🙂

So what should you do? Well, you have some options … options that don’t involve dragons or light sabers. You can check out our webinar on the Ins and Outs of Flash Conversion … or contact a third-party company, such as ILG, for help. We’ve converted hundreds of e-learning modules from Flash.
