So, What's The Difference?

COMPETENCY MODEL A competency model focuses on individual skills and behaviors required for success in specific roles or across an organization.

It’s a framework for defining the skill and knowledge requirements of a job and is often organized into categories that define successful job performance.

While defining general skills and knowledge needed, a competency model often doesn’t include the specific application of how these skills and knowledge are applied on the job.

It’s often used for recruitment, performance management, training, and career development.

Example: A leadership competency model might include skills such as decision-making, delegation, and strategic-thinking.

IMPACT MAP An impact map focuses on organizational skills and how to achieve them — specifically, it gets at how a general skill is applied on the job.

It helps identify what actions will have the greatest impact on achieving strategic objectives.

An impact map visually displays, in table format, the links among organizational goals and the desired results, critical actions, and key skills and knowledge of a role.

Example: Communication skills is a competency; calling the 1-800 number to place a product order is the critical task. A customer service improvement impact map might show how training and process changes lead to reduced call times and higher customer satisfaction.
